What is an Internship?

A student internship is an un paid (sometimes paid), career-focused experience during which students become directly involved in the workplace. This experience provides an opportunity for a student to apply the skills obtained in school to real work situations and to learn additional skills. An internship will also help students to define career goals.

 

Program Goals

At the end of the internship, students should be able to:

1. Identify a career cluster of interest

2. Determine whether a career is compatible with interests, values, skills, and aptitudes

3. Prepare a resume

4. Write a correct resume cover letter

5. Develop interviewing skills

6. Write correct, timely thank you letters

7. Set priorities, plan use of time and adhere to a schedule

8. Develop effective interpersonal skills with workers and supervisors

9. Develop important work habits such as promptness, reliability and accuracy

10. Understand the evaluation process in the work place

11. Explain the correct business attire and etiquette

Minimum Requirements are 75 credit hours. However student can earn up to 3 credit hours of experience. The following is the break down of the credit hours in comparison to actual hours:

3 credit hours = 225 hours in total OR 15 hours per week

2 credit hours = 150 hours in total OR 10 hours per week

1 credit hours = 75 hours in total OR 8 hours per week.

The hours may be arranged to suit the convenience of the supervisor and student. Hours will translate into credits on the high school transcripts.
